INDEPENDENT RESEARCH & DOCUMENTATION

Explore ideas.
Document them properly.

ASU Labs is an independent research and documentation project operated by Toby Duffield. It provides a structured home for learning, technical projects, theoretical work and practical interests — with evidence, provenance, responsible conduct and safety treated as core requirements.

01 / ABOUT

A personal laboratory for serious curiosity.

ASU Labs exists to separate curiosity from recklessness. The purpose is to investigate subjects, develop skills, test ideas where lawful and appropriate, and keep a durable record of what was learned.

The platform may cover computing, engineering, food and practical skills, social questions, policy ideas, scientific concepts, design, documentation and other interests. A subject appearing here does not mean that every claim is established fact; records should identify evidence, uncertainty and limitations.

ASU Labs is not a university, accredited laboratory, regulator, professional body, medical service, legal practice or government organisation. It does not claim authority that it does not hold.

02 / RESEARCH

What I do

01

Research

Read, compare and analyse information from primary sources, official guidance, academic material and other credible evidence.

02

Build

Develop websites, software, systems and practical projects, documenting decisions and limitations rather than hiding them.

03

Think

Develop theories and frameworks about people, systems and society while distinguishing hypotheses from established evidence.

04

Document

Create dated records, revisions, source trails and project notes so the development of work can be understood and challenged later.

FactsSupported by identifiable evidence.
ObservationsRecorded experiences or measurements.
HypothesesPropositions requiring further testing.
OpinionsInterpretations, clearly labelled as such.

03 / BACKGROUND

Toby Duffield

Independent developer, researcher and practical learner.

My background combines military and protective-services education, hospitality and kitchen work, warehouse operations, leadership experience, computing and independent project development.

I completed a Level 3 Military & Protective Services Diploma at Duchy College with an overall Merit, including Distinctions in preparation for uniformed services, leadership skills, equality, diversity and inclusion, hierarchy and routine, and telecommunications. I also have practical experience in kitchens, hospitality, warehousing and food preparation.

Selected experience includes kitchen and food-preparation work, front-of-house hospitality, warehouse picking/packing and independent software and web development. Detailed employment and credential records are maintained separately from this public research profile.

04 / PROVENANCE

Evidence before assertion.

Significant work should receive a unique reference, title, author, creation date, publication date, revision number, source list and status. Material is not silently overwritten when a substantive correction is made.

For important private records, ASU Labs uses an evidence register, original-file preservation, revision history and cryptographic hashes where useful. These mechanisms support provenance; they do not independently create copyright, patent, trade-mark or other rights.

Potentially patentable material is treated as pre-publication until IP review. Publication is not used as a substitute for registration or professional advice.

05 / SAFETY GOVERNANCE

Safety is a gate, not a disclaimer.

ASU Labs does not treat a warning paragraph as a substitute for risk management. Before practical work is undertaken, the activity must be considered against legality, competence, foreseeable harm, controls and emergency arrangements.

01 — Stop

If an activity may be unlawful, requires authority or competence that is not held, or presents uncontrolled serious risk, it stops rather than being improvised.

02 — Assess

Identify hazards, who could be affected, exposure routes, equipment risks, environmental effects and credible failure modes.

03 — Control

Prefer elimination, substitution, containment, engineering and procedural controls. PPE is not treated as a universal solution.

04 — Record

Keep relevant assessments, source documents, decisions, incidents, near misses and review dates. Reassess when circumstances change.

Stop condition: If required competence, controls, facilities, supervision, authorisation or legal certainty cannot be established, the activity does not proceed. Full safety framework →

06 / RESPONSIBLE EXPLORATION

One standard for every project.

Law first

Law, licensing, permissions, restrictions and site rules take priority over curiosity.

Competence

Specialist work requires appropriate knowledge, training, supervision, equipment and authority.

Evidence

Observed facts, calculations, sourced claims, assumptions, hypotheses and opinions are distinguished.

Traceability

Dates, versions, sources and material changes are recorded so development is auditable.

Review

Unexpected results, changed conditions, errors or new information trigger reassessment.

Proportion

Higher-risk subjects receive higher standards; inability to establish adequate controls is a reason not to proceed.

07 / HIGHER-RISK SUBJECTS

Responsible exploration has boundaries.

Some interests may involve chemicals, heat, pressure, machinery, electrical systems, biological material, tools or other hazards. ASU Labs does not publish operational instructions where doing so could materially increase the ability to cause harm.

For workplace chemical hazards, official HSE guidance emphasises identifying hazards, assessing exposure and who may be affected, choosing controls, maintaining them, providing information and training, and reviewing the assessment when circumstances change.

Where a proposed activity falls outside ordinary low-risk learning, the appropriate route is qualified supervision, an appropriate facility, formal training, professional advice or not proceeding.

08 / ASSOCIATED WORK

Projects & reference sites

Association here means cross-reference only. It does not by itself establish a company relationship, endorsement, agency, partnership or legal ownership of another person's work.

09 / LEGAL & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Clear boundaries protect everyone.

See Terms & limitations and Governance for the full framework.
